Attack of the Ogrons

Boaz looked out cautiously from behind the curtains. There are patrols all round the house, but they don’t seem to be coming near it.’

Anat said, ‘Well, why should they? They think the place is empty, apart from the Doctor and that poor girl.’

Boaz turned away from the window. ‘They’re bound to send people here before Styles comes back. I know from the history books – such a man will have many servants.’

Anat shrugged. ‘It’s a big house. We’ll find somewhere to hide, In the attics perhaps, or down in the cellar with our prisoner.’

‘Yes, of course,’ said Boaz. ‘Or we could take the servants hostage. We only need to survive until Styles arrives. Once we kill him, we either escape or die. Doesn’t really matter which, does it?’

Anat looked at him with concern. She wondered how much longer Boaz would be able to stand the waiting. He could only bear it by screwing himself up to a pitch of fanatic dedication. Her own nature was calmer, more determined. She bitterly regretted the deaths they had caused – the girl, the UNIT patrol… But she accepted them as a necessary part of the price that must be paid if they were to succeed. In the same way she accepted that her own death might well be a part of that price.

Suddenly there came a familiar sound. They rushed to the window.

Ogrons were materialising outside the house. Boaz raised his gun and blasted the first one before it had time to get its bearings. Anat joined him at the window.

For a while it was a kind of grim target practice. An Ogron would materialise, look round, and he instantly shot down, vanishing as fast as it had arrived. But they couldn’t get rid of them all. Others were materialising out of their line of fire and coming to join the attack.

The air was full of the savage buzzing of the disintegrator guns. Soon the rattle of machine-gun fire was added to the din.

Boaz said exultantly to Anat, ‘It’s the soldiers!’

UNIT patrols began to arrive, opening fire on the Ogrons. The soldiers tried to form a protective line in front of the house.

The UNIT soldiers fought at some disadvantage. The weapons of the Ogrons were far more effective. It took a full clip of machine-gun bullets to kill an Ogron. Anything less and the monsters just went on fighting, roaring with rage and pain, but hardly even slowed down. But one direct hit from an Ogron pistol could blast a UNIT soldier into extinction.

Boaz and Anat, shooting from the now shattered French windows, had disintegrator guns of their own, and the atomic power packs built into the handles were practically everlasting. But they were only two, and the Ogren outnumbered them badly.

In the cellar the Doctor heard the sound of battle, and speeded up his attempt to escape. By flailing his legs about he had managed to upset a whole rack of wine bottles. They had fallen to the floor in a crash of broken glass.
